Divine Design: Unveiling the Truth Behind the Dinosaurs' Extinction and the Iridium Layer

Did a Meteor Wipe Out the Dinosaurs? What about the Iridium Layer?
The extinction of the dinosaurs is a topic that has captivated scientists and the general public alike. While secular science offers various theories to explain their demise, a biblical perspective sheds light on the true history of dinosaurs. According to the Bible, land animals, including dinosaurs, were created on Day 6 of Creation, approximately 6,000 years ago. Adam's sin brought death, disease, and bloodshed into the world, which means that dinosaurs could not have died before this event. The global Flood, which occurred about 1,656 years later, wiped out all land animals that were not on Noah's Ark. This catastrophic event led to the quick burial and fossilization of billions of animals, including dinosaurs.
After the Flood, dinosaurs coexisted with humans for a period of time. There are even references to them in ancient texts, such as Job 40:15 ff., and dragon legends found across different cultures. Eventually, dinosaurs died out due to factors similar to those that cause extinctions in other species: hunting by humans, changes in climate, loss of food sources, and habitat fragmentation.
Secular science proposes various explanations for the extinction of dinosaurs. Some theories include mammals eating dinosaur eggs, the evolution of new narcotic plants, global cooling or warming, loss of plants causing herbivores to starve and subsequently causing carnivores to starve, and a lowering of oxygen partial pressure in the atmosphere. However, one of the most popular theories is the "great impact" theory, which suggests that a meteor strike 66.4 million years ago caused dramatic climatic changes and led to the extinction of dinosaurs and many other species.
This theory was proposed by geologist Walter Alvarez in 1980 after discovering a layer of clay with a high iridium content. The iridium layer was seen as evidence of a meteor impact. However, there are several problems with this theory. First, the extinction was not as sudden as the long-age interpretation of the geological record suggests. The spread of sedimentary deposits aligns more with the idea that they were formed during Noah's Flood. Additionally, light-sensitive species survived, extinctions do not correlate with crater dates, and modern volcanic eruptions do not cause global extinction patterns.
The iridium enrichment, which is considered a key proof of the meteor impact theory, is not as clearly defined as claimed. Drill cores of the Chicxulub Crater in Mexico, which is often cited as evidence for the theory, do not support the idea that it is an impact crater. It is possible that some scientists did not speak out against this theory due to fear of undermining other ideas related to climatic changes.
Meteorologist Mike Oard has proposed an alternative explanation for dinosaur fossils and tracks that aligns with a flood scenario. He suggests that iridium enrichment can be attributed to massive volcanism during the Flood. The largest iridium anomalies may have been caused by meteorites striking during this catastrophic event. The iridium layers found in the geological record can be explained by temporary lulls in sedimentation rate during the Flood.
The K/T boundary, which is often associated with the end of the dinosaur age, is not synchronous worldwide and lacks a coherent definition. Very few dinosaur fossils are actually found near this boundary. In some cases, the end of the dinosaur era is defined by the highest dinosaur fossil in a locality, creating circular reasoning. While the Alvarez theory is supported by the iridium spike in the K/T boundary, in some localities, the K/T boundary is defined by this spike.
In conclusion, when examining the extinction of dinosaurs from a biblical perspective, we find a coherent framework for interpreting their history. Dinosaurs were created on Day 6 of Creation, coexisted with humans for a period of time after the Flood, and eventually died out due to various factors. The theories proposed by secular science, including the meteor impact theory, have significant problems and do not align with the biblical account. By considering the true history recorded in the Bible, we can gain a deeper understanding of the extinction of dinosaurs and its implications.
