Jesus' View on the Age of the Earth

Jesus believed in a young world, contrary to the views held by many theistic evolutionists. While most people in the evangelical Christian world accept the standard secular timeline of billions of years, Jesus' teachings and the biblical authors make it clear that this perspective is incorrect. According to the evolutionary timeline, humans have only been around for one or two million years, placing them towards the end of the timeline. However, Jesus explicitly stated that God made them male and female "from the beginning of creation" (Mark 10:6). This indicates that Jesus believed human beings were present from the very beginning, which contradicts the idea of a billions-of-years-old earth.

Furthermore, Luke 11:50-51 records Jesus saying, "That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; From the blood of Abel to the blood of Zacharias." The Apostle Paul also affirms that God's eternal power and divine nature have been clearly perceived since "the creation of the world" (Romans 1:20). These references demonstrate that Jesus and Paul both believed that people have been able to witness God's attributes in His creation since its inception.

Comparing timelines, it becomes evident that Jesus considered Day 6, when humans were created, as effectively "the beginning of creation" from a few thousand years later. However, according to the secular timescale, a creation event occurring fifteen billion years ago would place humans at the end of this timeline. Therefore, accepting the secular timeline directly contradicts the statements made by Jesus.

Sadly, today, many Christians, including those in academic and theological institutions, believe and teach that billions of years is an accepted fact. When confronted with these biblical references to a young earth, responses vary. Often, attempts are made to explain away these references or simply ignore them. These responses reveal that the authority being deferred to is not the Word of God but rather current secular opinion.

One personal experience exemplifies this shift in authority. A prominent university professor, who opposed a straightforward view of Genesis and was head of a group of Christian academics opposing creationist beliefs, admitted that Jesus believed in a recent creation. When asked how he reconciled this with his theistic evolutionary perspective, he shockingly responded that Jesus didn't know as much science as we do today. He claimed that Jesus, as God in human form, deliberately laid aside His pre-incarnate divinity and therefore lacked knowledge about the true events of creation.

This admission from a leading theistic evolutionist highlights the significance of the challenge to biblical authority posed by the belief in long ages and evolution. If we cannot trust Jesus' words on some issues, how can we trust anything in the Bible? This challenges essential theological doctrines such as the Resurrection, marriage, atonement, and Heaven, which rely on the historical events described in Genesis.

It is tragic that so many Christian leaders have allowed secular interpretations of evidence to dictate their understanding of God's Word. Despite the abundance of scientific evidence supporting a biblical worldview, compromising Christians have been intimidated into accepting evolutionary conclusions. It is crucial to recognize that the acceptance of billions of years is not solely a scientific issue but a challenge to biblical authority and the foundation of our faith.

Why This Matters

The age of the earth is not merely an academic or scientific debate; it has significant theological implications. Accepting a young earth aligns with Jesus' teachings and affirms the authority of Scripture. It allows for a consistent understanding of biblical doctrines and avoids compromising essential theological truths. Additionally, recognizing the impact of secular opinions on our interpretation of Scripture helps us guard against unbiblical compromises in other areas of our faith.

Think About It

Consider how your understanding of the age of the earth influences your interpretation of Scripture and your faith. Reflect on the authority you give to secular opinions in contrast to the Word of God. How can you ensure that your beliefs align with Jesus' teachings and remain faithful to the authority of Scripture?
