Galaxies, Black Holes, and Creation
Introduction
Dr Markus Blietz is an astrophysicist who holds a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany. He has worked in the semiconductor industry and is now a patent manager. Dr Blietz became a Christian later in life and is a strong supporter of creation ministries. In this interview, he shares his expertise as an astrophysicist and his perspective as a creationist.
Black Holes and Galaxies
Dr Blietz's research focused on a special class of galaxies called Seyfert galaxies, which contain active galactic nuclei. These nuclei are very bright, star-like centers that are believed to be caused by supermassive black holes at the center of these galaxies. A black hole is a region in space where an immense amount of mass is concentrated in a small space, creating an extremely strong gravitational force. This force bends the fabric of space, preventing even light from escaping.
However, despite their name, black holes can emit light. Gas clouds surrounding the black hole form an accretion disc as they spiral into it. As the gas clouds accelerate, they emit highly energetic X-rays. These X-rays can then hit other gas clouds further away from the center, causing them to heat up and emit visible light. By analyzing the spectral distribution of this light, scientists can determine the chemical composition of the gas and calculate the mass of the black hole.
The Importance of Creation
Dr Blietz emphasizes the importance of holding to a literal interpretation of the creation account in Genesis. He believes that if Jesus affirmed the literal creation of the world in six normal-length days, then Christians should do the same. He argues that compromising on this issue can undermine the truth of the Bible and the Gospel.
He also discusses the relationship between science and faith. While science is a valuable tool for understanding the physical world, it has limitations. Science cannot answer the big questions of where we come from, why we are here, and where we are going. These questions fall within the realm of philosophy and theology.
Astronomical Support for the Bible
Dr Blietz points out that science actually provides support for the Bible in various areas. For example, he mentions the existence of comets in our solar system. According to evolutionary scientists, comets should have disappeared completely after less than 10,000 years due to melting. However, there is no evidence for the so-called Oort Cloud, which is proposed as a source for replenishing comets. If the Bible is true and the universe is only around 6,000 years old, it would make sense for many comets to still exist.
He also criticizes the big bang model, highlighting the lack of observational evidence for dark matter and dark energy. These concepts are used to uphold the model but have never been observed in a laboratory. Additionally, he questions why there is a virtual non-existence of antimatter, which should have been generated in equal amounts according to the model.
Distant Starlight
One of the challenges often raised against a young-earth creationist perspective is how light from distant galaxies can reach Earth if the universe is only 6,000 years old. Dr Blietz suggests that time dilation effects from general relativity may provide an explanation. According to this idea, time on Earth could have moved slower than time near the edge of the universe during the beginning of creation. This would allow light from distant galaxies to have had enough time to reach Earth.
He mentions the work of John Hartnett and Russell Humphreys, who propose these time dilation effects in their models. While their ideas are not widely accepted in mainstream science, they offer a possible scientific explanation that aligns with a young-earth creationist perspective.
Pursuing Science as a Christian
Dr Blietz encourages Christians who are interested in science to pursue it as a way to serve God. He believes that true understanding of the world comes from belief in Jesus Christ. Before becoming a Christian, he found the evolutionary worldview unsatisfying and full of contradictions. Only the truth found in the Word of God can provide comprehensive answers to life's fundamental questions.
He acknowledges that studying science as a Christian can be challenging, as dissenting views are often ridiculed and persecuted in the scientific establishment. However, he believes that using the gifts given by God to study science is a way to glorify Him and serve Him better.
