Unveiling the Truth About Sea Monsters in Christian Lore

Sea Monsters: More Than a Legend?
Sea monsters have been a part of sea lore for centuries, but only recently have they gained attention as more than just products of sailors' imaginations. With advancements in scientific investigation, there is growing evidence that these mysterious creatures may have actually existed. Interestingly, there seems to be a connection between fossils of prehistoric marine reptiles and the monsters described in the Bible. In the Old Testament, the creature known as "leviathan" is mentioned four times and described as a terrifying beast with immense strength, terrifying teeth, and scales like rows of shields. While some scholars identify leviathan as a crocodile, there are several problems with this interpretation. Crocodiles do not inhabit the deep ocean and are not so terrifying that no one dares to tackle them.
Is Leviathan a Crocodile?
Some argue that leviathan could be a crocodile, but this theory falls short when considering the characteristics described in the Bible. Crocodiles primarily live in inland waters such as lakes, rivers, swamps, and estuaries. While they can venture into coastal areas and swim out to sea, the deep ocean is not their typical habitat. Additionally, crocodiles are not so terrifying that no one dares to confront them. Native tribes regularly trap and kill crocodiles using simple technology.
Submarine Report: A Sea Serpent or Leviathan?
Reports of "sea serpents" describe large marine animals resembling crocodiles but much larger in size. One notable sighting occurred during World War I when the British steamer Iberian was torpedoed and sunk by the German U-boat U28 in the North Atlantic. After the sinking, an underwater explosion caused pieces of wreckage and a gigantic sea-animal to be shot out of the water. The animal was approximately 60 feet long and had four limbs with powerful webbed feet and a long tail tapering to a point. This size exceeds the dimensions of the largest known crocodiles, suggesting that it may be something different.
Identifying Leviathan: Possible Candidates
In June 1983, a carcass was found on Bungalow Beach in Gambia, potentially offering a clue to identifying leviathan. Unfortunately, the carcass was unavailable for analysis. However, noted zoologist Dr. Karl P.N. Shuker has short-listed six possible identities for leviathan, with two of them aligning closely with the descriptions given in the Bible and the sea creature seen by the U28 submarine commander. One possibility is the mosasaur, a giant marine reptile similar to monitor lizards. The other candidate is a thalattosuchian, a type of sea-crocodile believed to be extinct for 110 million years. Dr. Shuker considers the thalattosuchian to be the most likely contender.
The Behemoth: A Swamp-Dwelling Monster
Another intriguing monster mentioned in the Bible is the behemoth. In Job 40:15-24, it is described as a large grass-eating beast with great strength in its loins and belly. Its tail is compared to a cedar tree, and its bones are said to be like bars of iron. The behemoth is also portrayed as a swamp-dweller. Biblical scholars have struggled to provide a satisfactory explanation for this creature, attempting to identify it as an ox, elephant, hippopotamus, or crocodile. However, none of these animals completely fit the description given in Job. The large herbivorous dinosaurs, on the other hand, match many of the characteristics attributed to the behemoth.
Could Dinosaurs Still Be Alive?
The notion of dinosaurs still being alive today may seem far-fetched, but there have been reports from the Congo Basin in central Africa for almost a century about a creature known as "Mokele Mbembe." Natives describe it as resembling a dinosaur, with lengths varying from five to ten meters. The creature has a long tail, a very long neck, and a head compared to a snake. Its legs are short, with three visible claws on the hind foot, and its footprints are rounded and about 30 centimeters in diameter. While some skeptics dismiss Mokele Mbembe as a myth, Professor Roy P. Mackal, who led expeditions into the Congo in search of the creature, believes it may be a small dinosaur, specifically a surviving Atlantosaurus.
Exploring the Possibility of Living Dinosaurs
The idea of dinosaurs still being alive is not implausible when considering what the Bible teaches about the history of the world. Africa remains largely unexplored, with vast swamps and dense jungle covering the Congo Basin that may have never been visited by humans. Similarly, the world's oceans cover over two-thirds of the planet and average a depth of 3,000 meters. At their deepest point, the oceans reach 11 kilometers. With such vast and largely unexplored habitats, it is entirely possible that unknown animals exist.
Lessons from Living Fossils
The discovery of living fossils such as the coelacanth challenges evolutionary assumptions. This fish was believed to have been extinct for millions of years based on fossils but was actually known to Madagascan fishermen who had been catching it for centuries. Similarly, there have been instances where living organisms previously known only through fossils were discovered. These findings raise questions for evolutionists regarding how these organisms survived unchanged through millions of years of mutations and changing environments. However, from a biblical perspective, these findings align with the global Flood described in the Bible.
Embracing Biblical Truths
While skeptics may dismiss reports of sea monsters and living dinosaurs as mere legends or myths, it is essential to approach these topics from a biblical perspective. The Bible provides insights into the existence of mysterious creatures such as leviathan and behemoth, offering descriptions that align with known prehistoric marine reptiles and large herbivorous dinosaurs. Exploring possibilities like Mokele Mbembe in the Congo Basin and considering the vast unexplored regions of our world can lead us to embrace the biblical truth that God's creation is diverse and full of wonders. As Christians, we can marvel at the mysteries of the deep while remaining grounded in our faith, knowing that the Bible provides a solid foundation for understanding the world around us.
