Some critics argue that the prostate gland is poorly designed because the urethra, the tube through which urine flows, passes through it. They claim that when the prostate enlarges, it restricts urine flow. However, a closer examination reveals that the positioning of the prostate gland actually makes sense.
The Prostate as a Thickening of the Urethral Wall
Rather than considering the urethra passing through the prostate, it is more accurate to view the prostate as a thickening of the urethral wall. This positioning is crucial for its function in reproduction. The prostate produces a major component of semen, which needs to be injected into the urethra at the right time to join with spermatozoa from the testicles. The prostate consists of 30-50 glands that secrete into 16-32 ducts, which open independently into the urethra. During ejaculation, the entire prostate contracts, quickly emptying its contents and propelling the semen along. Additionally, the prostate contains nerve plexuses and contributes to the pleasure experienced during male sexual activity.
The Purpose of Prostate Positioning
One might wonder why the designer did not simply place the prostate alongside the urethra. The answer lies in the fact that such a placement would require a new duct system and additional mechanisms to propel its secretions and semen. Moreover, the positioning of the prostate gland acts as a spacer between the bladder and the urogenital diaphragm. This provides support for the bladder and prevents kinking of the urethra when the bladder is full. If this were not the case, extra ligaments and attachment structures would be necessary. Additionally, this positioning could also serve to shut off urine flow during ejaculation. Incontinence can be a potential problem when the prostate is removed.

Critics often point to problems associated with prostate enlargement as evidence of poor design. However, it is important to note that prostate enlargement is not a normal feature but a pathological one. From a biblical perspective, these issues would be regarded as post-Fall. Furthermore, only about half of men have significant gland enlargement by the age of 80, and only a quarter experience urinary symptoms related to it. In fact, the prostate gland tends to shrink in many men as they get older. Factors such as hormone imbalance, obesity, infections, medicinal side effects, and mutations contribute to prostate problems.

Diet plays a significant role in prostate health. Japanese men living in Japan have fewer problems compared to Japanese men living in America who develop similar issues as other ethnic backgrounds. This difference is attributed to variations in diet. The traditional Japanese diet includes a lot of fish, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids known for their anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, fish contains zinc, which inhibits an enzyme involved in the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone—this conversion stimulates prostate enlargement. Tofu is also a regular part of the Japanese diet and has mild estrogenic effects that counteract the negative effects of excessive dihydrotestosterone on prostate hypertrophy. A study found that inadequate vegetable consumption quadrupled the risk of prostate problems. Therefore, it becomes clear that an unhealthy diet can significantly impact men's prostate health.

When considering the overall functioning of the prostate gland throughout a man's life, it becomes evident that it is designed remarkably well. Many other mammals have similar designs as well. If the prostate were truly poorly designed, as critics claim, natural selection would have eliminated this design long ago. While enlargement can occur and lead to complications, it is not a normal feature and can be attributed to various factors.
