The brain alone may contain anywhere from ten trillion to one hundred trillion synapses, which act as tiny calculators tallying electrical signals. Messages are relayed through this vast network, moving from one neuron to another.

Electrical Signaling in the Body

The transmission of information in our body occurs through nerve fibers, which are extensions of individual nerve cells. The inside and outside of most cells are bathed in fluid containing positively and negatively charged ions. Through complex biological processes, the cells transport positively charged ions across their membranes, creating an electric potential.

When the membrane becomes more permeable at a specific spot, positive ions flow back into the cell, depolarizing that area. This depolarization spreads along the nerve fiber like a wave. It's important to note that the message isn't transmitted by an electric current but rather by a wave of depolarization.

At synapses, where one nerve fiber connects with another, special transmitter chemicals are released. These chemicals cause depolarization in the receiving neuron, initiating a new wave of depolarization. After release, these transmitter chemicals must be rapidly broken down to allow the neuron to reset and prepare for the next impulse.

To think that this intricate design could have arisen through evolutionary randomness and selection is difficult to fathom.
